Mother and son charged following bomb scare at ANZ bank, Stocklands Wetherill Park

A mother and son have been charged over a bomb scare at a Sydney bank which resulted in a major shopping centre being evacuated.

Police will allege a 67-year-old woman called the office of the Stocklands shopping centre at Wetherill Park and said there was a bomb inside the ANZ bank about 10am on October 3.

The woman’s 40-year-old son allegedly called the bank about 90 minutes later and warned of a potential bomb threat. Both are known to police.

A NSW Police spokesman said officers immediely responded to the calls and evacuated the shopping centre and bank.

Officers searched the area and did not find any bombs or explosive devices.

The man and woman were arrested at a Smithfield home on the same day of the alleged bomb hoax and were taken to Fairfield police station where they were charged with giving false information – person/property in danger.

The 40-year-old man appeared before Fairfield Local Court on October 4 where he was formally refused bail. His matter was adjourned to November 15 at the same court.

The 67-year-old woman was granted conditional bail and will appear at Fairfield Local Court on October 25.
