Four men fled the scene following a wild brawl in western Sydney after a teen allegedly ran at the group brandishing a hammer after they stopped their vehicle nearby, a court has heard.

Police were called to Windsor Rd in Merrylands about 10.45pm on Friday, where they found Oscar Salas, 18, being treated by NSW paramedics for facial injuries.

Police allege Salas was assaulted during an altercation with four men who fled in a vehicle.

A short time later officers stopped an Audi hatchback travelling on Burnett St, Merrylands, and removed four men — Epa Novale, 26, Zane Cassim, 24, Levi Vitukawalu, 26 and Simione Vana, 28 — from the vehicle.

The four men and Salas were arrested following police inquiries.

All five appeared before Parramatta Local Court on Saturday via video link, and were all granted bail by Magistrate Paul Mulroney.

Salas was represented by Legal Aid and pleaded not guilty to the charge of affray.

Police allege Salas was inside his vehicle when the four men turned up in a targeted attack before Salas left his vehicle holding a hammer.

The police prosecutor said that while he anticipated the defence will claim Salas raised the hammer in self defence, “the inference is that he is the aggressor”.

Magistrate Mulroney said the incident was matter of “serious violence”.

“You will be saying you were acting in self-defence, but you could have driven away,” he said.

Novale, Cassim and Vana did not enter pleas to the charge of affray.

Magistrate Mulroney said the lack of eyewitnesses would need to be considered when verifying submissions on how Novale sustained a cut to his forehead and Cassim’s injured his knuckles.

Vitukawalu did not enter pleas to the charges of not keeping left of the dividing line, not stopping a vehicle when directed, not displaying P-plates and affray.

Magistrate Mulroney said Vitukawalu helped the four men escape by driving away before being caught by police.

“Your driving history does not help you as it shows you’re happy to ignore court orders,” he said.

The matters of Novale, Cassim, Vana, Vitukawalu were adjourned to September 6 at Parramatta Local Court.

Sala’s matter was adjourned to the same court for October 18.
