Jesse Freeman made $3000 in about four minutes when he won Canley Vale’s Man Vs Pho challenge on September 5.
Mr Freeman, a 25-year-old competitive eater from Narrabeen, finished the 2.8kg feed in 3 minutes and 54 seconds — eclipsing last year’s record by more than a minute-and-a-half.
“I was ecstatic, everyone was freaking out,” he said. “I just loved every bit of it.”
Mr Freeman was one of 10 people to qualify for the Man Vs Pho finals and Cabramatta’s’ District 8 restaurant.
“(At the finals) my first thought was to stay calm … keep an eye out on what other people are doing.
“I wanted to make sure I could get to the chewy stuff first and then move to the liquid part of the challenge. Then I saw other challengers using the bowl to scoop up the liquid.”
He has been competitive eating for the last two-and-a-half years, specialising mostly in meats and burgers. His FoodComa_Eats Instagram page has 172,000 followers, while his YouTube channel hosts 86 videos and 14,000 subscribers.
“I started when I was doing intermittent fasting, when you eat for eight hours and fast the rest,” he said.
“There’s a lot of balance that comes into this stuff. I (competitive eat) about once a week or fortnight, and train six days a week.”
First prize was a $3000 travel voucher. Mr Freeman said he and his girlfriend haven’t picked a location yet.
“At this point in our lives, we just need to be pampered,” he said. “We’ll go to some sort of island with a 5 star hotel, massages, acupuncture and relax.”
