Target loyalists will have a limited time to shop at its Wetherill Park store, one of dozens across the country to be converted into a Kmart store.
A Kmart Group spokeswoman confirmed the store, located inside Stockland Wetherill Park Shopping Centre, will make the transition from October 1.
The spokeswoman said Target was transforming its store network and focusing on a “stronger online business”.
“Across the Kmart Group we want to build profitable and sustainable businesses and one of the ways we can achieve this is through optimisation of our store network – we have made a significant effort to avoid store closures and retain our team by converting suitable Target stores to Kmart stores.”
The spokeswoman said existing staff will be offered the opportunity to “join the growing Kmart team”.
In May, parent company Wesfarmers announced up to 167 Target stores could disappear over the next 12 months, with as many as 75 stores closing and 92 converted to Kmart stores.
Fairfield Mayor Frank Carbone said it was “good news” for Kmart fans and “not so good” for Target loyalists.
“Either way it’s good to see continued investment in our city, I know we have some big Kmart fans living in our city,” he said.
Fairfield has one other Kmart store located at Fairfield Forum Shopping Centre.
