A young aspiring lawyer caught speeding 20km/h over the speed limit on his sister’s wedding day has fronted court in a bid to appeal the suspension of his drivers licence.

Khaled Anani, 22, of Yagoona faced Fairfield Local Court on Tuesday where he appealed the decision from Transport NSW to suspend his licence for three months after he was caught speeding on January 9.

Magistrate Stuart Devine said he didn’t know why Anani needed to speed on his sister’s wedding day but there is “no excuse for speeding”.

“You’re a young man on your P’s who likes speeding … you’re the most dangerous driver in the universe,” Mr Devine said.

“It’s nothing personal, you’re just a young bloke driving too fast and it makes you dangerous.”

Anani’s lawyer, Mr Wafai said while his client’s actions were “not reflective of a person with those aspirations” to be a lawyer, he is determined to make something out of himself.

“Losing licence would put a dent on his prospects of rehabilitation,” Mr Wafai said.

Mr Wafai said a licence suspension for his client would result in his employment being terminated and would impact his ability to assist his mother and two younger siblings with school pick up and family duties.

Magistrate Devine said he “couldn’t ignore” that Anani was given two letters in November and December last year advising he was running out of demerit points for earlier offences.

The two offences from 2021 included not reversing a vehicle safely and not giving particulars after a crash on August 10, 2021.

“I have taken into account your need for a licence but there is some need for specific deterrence,” Mr Devine said.

Anani’s appeal was dismissed and his licence was suspended for six weeks starting July 5.
