A hooded man accused of intimidating police officers with a stolen pair of garden shears at a Sydney police station will undergo a mental health assessment, a court has heard.

Jordan Howe-Kitiona, of Edmondson Park, was arrested at 10:20am on Saturday and was charged with larceny, stalk/intimidate and carrying an offensive implement in public.

The 23-year-old allegedly approached the counter of Cabramatta police station and tapped a pair of garden secateurs against the perspex screen.

A police officer directed Kitiona to drop the item. He complied before being arrested.

In documents tendered to court, police allege Kitiona stole the garden shears from Cabramatta Woolworths.

Kitiona, who did not appear in court, was represented by a legal aid lawyer who said her client’s behaviour was “very bizarre” and his father was concerned for his son’s wellbeing.

She said the 23-year-old had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and after receiving antipsychotic medication, her client entered into a period of psychosis.

Magistrate James Gibson approved the lawyer’s application for Kitiona to be moved from a correctional centre to a mental health facility to be assessed.

“Hopefully he will be seen by those medical practitioners and if he is mentally ill he will be taken to a section where he will be given help,” Mr Gibson said.

The matter was adjourned to November 1 and no pleas have been entered.

Kitiona made no application for bail and it was formally refused.
