A cult favourite Portuguese charcoal chicken shop has been given the green light to transform a vacant concrete block into a drive-through restaurant in Sydney’s southwest.

The Fernandes family opened the first Frangos store more than 30 years ago at Petersham in the inner west and has continued to grow a cult following across Sydney.

The Frangos dream started when current owner Luis Fernandes’ father, Luis senior, and mother Ana Fernandes, wanted a change from their previous jobs.

Mr Fernandes’ father was a mechanic and turned a roast chicken recipe he discovered while living in Angola for 10 years into a thriving business.

The family’s chicken empire has continued to expand with eight restaurants across NSW, including a drive through restaurant at Edmondson Park which opened in 2020.

Fairfield Council approved the $847,832 plans which will see a Frangos chicken restaurant on 746 Woodville Rd, Fairfield, after a development application was lodged by Saibaba Enterprises Pty Ltd.

The vacant site sold for $2.7m in 2021 and was previously a BP petrol station in the 1990s, then a drive-through pizza cafe, and a car yard.

The premises would have dine in and drive-through services and 15 carparking spaces accessed via Woodville Rd and Seville St.

The restaurant would operate seven days a week from 6.30am to 11pm, with business hours of 10am to 11pm.

Documents lodged with council say while the development is “not characteristic of the immediate surroundings” of industrial buildings, other takeaway food and drink premises with drive through are on Woodville Rd – including Hungry Jacks and McDonalds.

“It (the development) also provides a complementary retail use that serves and supports the Fairfield East industrial and business area, local residents and visitors,” the documents state.
