Fairfield’s walking group encourage others to join for a healthy heart
Fairfield’s walking group get together once a week as part of the Heart Foundation’s healthy lifestyles program
LOCAL walking group for the Heart Foundation’s seniors 50s and over meets once a week to catch up, smell the fresh air and get active.
Group co-ordinator Robert Ward, said he and his faithful four-legged pal, Mr Darcy, are there to greet walkers every Friday come rain, hail or shine.
“It definitely keeps you alive, and helps you to stay connected with your friends,” Mr Ward said.
The oldest member in the group is a sprightly man in his ‘80s who walks a couple of kilometres from his home to the group, which then walks another several kilometres together. He then walks back home again.
“He’s as fit as a fiddle,” Mr Ward said.
The group gets together as part of the Heart Foundation to promote healthy living, and Mr Ward encourages others to join them on their weekly walk.
“People have got to get out of their car, get out there and do it,” Mr Ward said.
The group meets at the carpark at the rear of the Fairfield Leisure Centre on Fridays at 9.30am and walk around the picturesque Fairfield Park for several kilometres.
Mr Ward said any fitness level is welcome to join, because it’s more about getting active.
