Fairfield City Council is consulting residents on plans to revitalise the town centre with trees, public art, street furniture, a town square and apartment-style living.

The council has also proposed a multicultural retail experience to increase visitor spend and caters for migrant communities.

Fairfield Chamber of Commerce president Vince Movizio said the plans were about growing the city.

“It’s all well and good to build housing to the sky, but we need public spaces where people can enjoy the sun and kids can play somewhere outside,” Mr Movizio said.

“Kids these days are fixated on devices; we are trying to come up with something better for them.”

Mr Movizio said the area had potential because it had been untouched for decades.

“Fairfield city is a blank canvas,” Mr Movizio said.

“There are a lot of opportunities here. The area might be behind other regions, but that means it can be planned much more cleverly and strategically.”

Either way, Fairfield is growing and Mr Movizio says it’s time to grow with it.

“We have just moved in 7000 refugees, let alone the region’s existing growth,” he said. “There’s a shortage of housing we need to address.”

However, Mr Movizio considers the lack of housing as part of the appeal for investors and developers.

“If you are building something like an apartment block, you want to be comfortable you can offload it when it’s complete,” Mr Movizio said.

“We need housing here so I don’t think investors need to be scared about that.”

It is just one part of a plan to completely transform the face of the Fairfield region.

The council is simultaneously exhibiting draft plans for Fairfield and Villawood town centres.

Iconic skyscrapers and attractive new residential and retail spaces are at the centre of plans for a more profitable, appealing Fairfield town centre.
