Drive-in movies are making a comeback in southwest Sydney, with the carpark at Fairfield Showground set to be converted into an outdoor cinema.
Moviegoers will be able to enjoy a night out and stay safe while COVID-19 restrictions remain in place, with dates and prices to be announced in coming weeks.
Fairfield mayor Frank Carbone said the community had done an “incredible job” of preventing the spread of the highly infectious virus and this would offer a fun and affordable activity for families.
The drive-in experience will be brought to life by Australian Amusements, the same company behind the annual Easter Fair at Fairfield Showground, which was cancelled due to coronavirus restrictions.
“We all miss going to the movies with a big bucket of popcorn with our families,” Cr Carbone said.
“This will be a fun, safe and affordable activity for families to come together and enjoy while still following important social distancing rules.
“Council is committed to the health and wellbeing of all our residents. We will make sure to follow all relevant COVID-19 restrictions at that time.”
Fairfield residents will also get a small bucket of popcorn free of charge.
While the conversion will be temporary, Cr Carbone said the council was working to provide new sporting fields, festival spaces, multipurpose facilities and more at the showground.
“I look forward to announcing more exciting events at the showground over the coming months and years.”
