Fairfield nurse Russell Marsh dies after short mystery illness

A NURSE’S untimely death has prompted an outpouring of sorrow from the Fairfield community.
Fairfield Hospital emergency nurse Russell Marsh, 39, fell ill with acute respiratory failure and kidney failure on February 12.
Hospital authorities were yet to identify the mystery illness that befell Mr Marsh when he died late last week.
Fairfield Hospital general manager Arnold Tammekand expressed sympathy on behalf of the hospital’s staff.
“We have been in touch with Mr Marsh’s wife to offer our condolences for her loss,” Mr Tammekand said.
“Mr Marsh was a valued staff member at Fairfield Hospital and he will be sadly missed.”
Mr Marsh’s sister-in-law Jasmine Nguyen confirmed Mr Marsh had died, after spending three weeks in a coma, in a post on his online fundraising page.
“With a heavy heart I would like to tell everyone Russell passed away early this morning with his family by his side,” she wrote.
“He fought a hard battle over the past four weeks but unfortunately it was a battle he did not win.”
Mr Tammekand said it would be inappropriate to speculate on what had caused Mr Marsh’s illness.
Members of the community paid tribute on Facebook.
Fairfield resident Pauline David said Mr Marsh was one of the nicest nurses she had ever met while being treated on several occasions in Fairfield Hospital’s emergency department.
“You were always someone that made me see the best in a bad situation and comforted me with your humour when times were tough,” Ms David said.
