When the RSPCA inspector tried to walk the dog to the car, it was so weak, starved and dehydrated that it collapsed.

It was one of two staffordshire bull terriers that had been neglected for months, leading to fly-bitten ears and periodontal disease.

Dayton Arcia, a 37-year-old man from Edensor Park, did not attend his hearing at Fairfield Local Court on September 17. He was charged with five offences of animal cruelty.

The two crossbreeds were found on his property by the inspector on January 19. They had protruding hips, ribs and spines, sunken eyes and ears bleeding from severe fly bites. No food, water or decent shelter was available.

No one was home, so the inspector left a notice to contact the RSPCA and immediately seized the dogs.

Larry, the brindle-coloured dog, collapsed from weakness and needed to be carried to the car.

A vet at the RSPCA found the dogs had been neglected and lost weight over a four-month period. They treated both dogs for a number of conditions.

Later, after efforts to rehabilitate the tan staffordshire bull terrier failed, it was humanely euthanised.

Larry thrived under RSPCA care. He is currently living with foster carers while waiting for someone to adopt him.

Mr Arcia was found guilty of failure to provide proper and sufficient food, failure to provide veterinary treatment for poor body condition, dehydration, severely fly-bitten ears and periodontal disease.

The court fined him $12,500, banned him from caring for another animal for five years and ordered him to pay $3108 in veterinary costs.
