Shoppers at Stockland Wetherill Park Shopping Centre have been placed on high alert after five recent cases reported spending time at the mall while infectious.
It comes after health authorities confirmed a woman in her 30s from southwest Sydney who worked at the Thai Rock restaurant at the shopping centre on July 9-12 and July 14 had tested positive for COVID-19.
NSW Chief Medical Officer Kerry Chant said five recent cases reported spending time at the shopping centre while infectious, prompting health officials to urge anyone who attended the mall in the past fortnight to monitor for symptoms, particularly those who attended the Thai restaurant on the dates the infected staff member worked.
If symptoms occur, individuals should isolate and get tested.
Eight new cases were diagnosed across the state in the 24 hours to 8pm on Thursday.
Two are in hotel quarantine and at least three have been linked to the Crossroads Hotel outbreak, which has grown to 42 infections.
Overnight, a further five cases were confirmed, two of which are being investigated and three linked to the hotel cluster.
Dr Chant said it was “pleasing” some of the cases were identified while individuals were in isolation.
“When our public health officials ask you to isolate, there is a reason. It means that many of these cases have not been out and about whilst infectious and therefore the chain of transmission has effectively been broken,” she said.
“While we’ve got a strong focus on the Crossroads cluster and the activities in southwestern Sydney it’s important that we are not complacent about the risk existing in other parts of the state.”
