A 25-year-old man, Kevin Ly from Condell Park has been arrested during a vehicle stop at Merrylands West about 1pm yesterday on Monday September 19, following extensive investigations into the murders of a couple in 2013 and 2014.
The body of Son Thanh Nguyen, aged 39, was discovered bound and wrapped in a sheet on Antwerp Street, Bankstown, just before 11.30pm on Wednesday 10 April 2013.
A passer-by made the gruesome discovery of Mr Nguyen’s body when they noticed a sheet covering something on the roadside.
The witness found the body of Mr Nguyen was face down with black cable ties that bound his hands behind his back when he lifted the sheet.
On Wednesday 15 January 2014, the body of Thi Kim Lien Do, aged 35, was discovered wrapped in a sheet in bushland near Flynn Avenue, West Hoxton.
Her body was in an extreme state of decomposition when she was found in bushland.
Police allege the victims were in a relationship with each other at the time of their murder and allege Mr Nguyen was murdered between 8pm and 11.35pm on April 10 2013, according to court documents.
Ms Do was allegedly murdered between 11.25pm and 11.35pm on the same day.
Following investigations under Strike Force Nyanda, detectives from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad arrested the 25-year-old yesterday.
Head of Homicide, Detective Superintendent Mick Willing addressed the media this morning.
“We will allege both were lured to a house in Canley Vale where they were bound and beaten to death’
“The pair were in a relationship and were last seen together on April 10, 2013.
“The motive for the murders is alleged to be Son Thanh Nguyen’s involvement in the drug trade where he was known to be a drug cook”.
Mr Ly was charged with two counts of murder and refused bail to appear at Fairfield Local Court.
In a brief appearance at Fairfield Local Court Mr Ly was formally refused bail.
He did not apply for bail.
Mr Ly waved to a group of supporters as he exited the court.
The case was adjourned to November 15 at Central Local Court.
Outside the court his supporters, including a tearful young woman, refused to speak to media.
