The scouts of 1st Canley Heights will be hosting affiliate groups from all over the world next year, marking the first time in almost a quarter of a century that Thang Tien is held in Sydney.
About 1000 scouts from the USA, Germany, France, Canada and more will visit Sydney for five days in 2020 for the international Thang Tien 12, an event held at two or four year intervals.
“We’ll introduce our friends from overseas to the bushland of Australia, and we’ll visit our city area, “ Dinh Tran said, 51, who has been the group’s leader for the last 14 years. “
“It will be held at a scout camp at Glenfield. There will be water activities, including kayaking, sailing and canoeing.”
The group hosted a fundraiser on Sunday, April 28, to help subsidise the trip for the young members invited. Return airfare alone, by Ms Dinh’s calculations, was $2000 a seat.
Parents made Vietnamese sweets that sold for $3 each, and large bowls of Pho soup for $12.
“Altogether we raised $4500 net,” she said. “We’re working towards raising a minimum of $20,000.
“That’s to teach kids the value: you don’t ask, you earn.”
One of the parents brought by a passion project: a hot rod car. Ms Tran said it generated a lot of buzz on the day and that it’ll be used in future fundraisers.
The 1st Canley Heights Scouts Group has 150 members – 80 of which are ‘youth’ members between the ages of eight and 25. The group was welcomed as a Vietnamese arm of Scouts Australia in 1992.
