A smart two-storey car park will be built on Hughes Street in Cabramatta, adding 220 parking spaces in the heart of the bustling town centre.

It will replace the existing 68-spot ground level car park currently on the site, and comes as developers express strong interest in nearby Cabramatta East.

Fairfield City Council began investigating the viability of a new car park in August last year. A proposal – featuring plans by architect firm Collins & Turner – was passed at last week’s council meeting.

The car park is estimated to cost Council from $9.5m to $10m. Construction is slated to start in July 2019, should go for about nine months and is likely to cause some traffic disruption to the constrained site.

All up, it will add 152 more car spaces than what’s available today in a facility hardwired with modern flourishes. The proposal details a traffic system that feeds the number of free spaces to electronic signage on its front, making it possible for drivers to see if there’s enough free spots to make entering it worthwhile.

Other technologies will help lower running costs, such as a solar panel installation and rain water tank.

The ground floor will be used for deliveries to retail businesses, while levels one and two will be designated public parking. Six of the carpark’s 220 spaces will be assigned as accessible parking, while there will also be parking spots for motorcycles.

Parking costs will stay the same; no expense, but a timed limit of two hours between 8am and 6pm.

The new complex will be built alongside the Dutton Lane car park that was opened in 2016. Though the two car park complexes will stand independent, people will be able to walk or drive between them via connection bridges.
