An email was responsible for the evacuation of a school in southwest Sydney, sparking a police operation on school grounds.
A large police presence was at the scene at Bonnyrigg High School including the use of police dogs and a PolAir helicopter to assist investigations.
A staff member, who wished to remain anonymous, told this masthead the incident may have resulted from a bomb threat.
A NSW Police spokesman has confirmed a bomb threat was made via an email sent to the school around 11.20am this morning.
Police conducted a thorough search of the school grounds as a result of the threat but didn’t locate anything and have since ended their on-site investigation.
Staff and students were evacuated from their classrooms for over an hour while the threat was being probed by authorities.
Bonnyrigg High School posted on social media around 11.20am informing parents of the school being evacuated and to not contact their children or the school.
A NSW Education Department spokeswoman advised in a statement that police had been called to the school after a “threatening email” was sent this morning and enacted their emergency procedures shortly after.
“Once a thorough search had been completed and emergency services deemed it safe, school operations returned to normal,” she stated.
“Students and teachers at the school are safe and all supports are in place.”
Students and staff were allowed back into class around 1pm.
