Global delivery giant Amazon has pledged to invest almost half a billion dollars into western Sydney and generate more than 1,000 jobs with the development of two new fulfilment centres.

Amazon Australia unveiled a $490m plan for two fulfilment centres at Brickworks’ Oakdale East Industrial Estate in Horsley Park, owned by industrial property giant Goodman and Brickworks.

NSW Premier Chris Minns, who officially launched the construction of the site on Tuesday, said the fulfilment centres were a “much needed capital investment from Amazon”.

“We’re thrilled it is taking place in Western Sydney,” he said. “This corner of Sydney will be one of the most exciting additions to job creation and economic development in the entire country.”

The purpose-built fulfilment centre is tipped to be 80,000 sqm – four and half times the size of the Opera House – with the capacity to hold up to 1.6 million items and slated to open in early 2026.

The second 33,400 sqm facility – equivalent to around 4.5 rugby league fields – is set to open later this year and will be a fit-out of an existing building and hold up to 600,000 items.

Amazon Australia’s operations manager Sandra McNeil, said the retail giant’s investment into Western Sydney would expand their operational footprint and provide more job opportunities for communities.

“We are committed to improving selection and delivery speed as demand continues to grow, as well as being dedicated to giving back to the communities in which we operate,” she said.

The new sites will offer a range of jobs including opportunities in IT, HR, technology alongside roles to pick, pack and ship items to customers.

Goodman Australia chief executive Jason Little said the plans would “boost the western Sydney economy” and extended Goodman’s existing $500m investment in the “western Sydney employment area”.

“Most importantly, we’re providing our customer Amazon with the essential infrastructure it needs to expand and help meet growing consumer needs in western Sydney and beyond,” he said.

Since opening its first Sydney fulfilment centre in Moorebank in 2018, Amazon has invested more than $1.5 billion to Western Sydney.

The global retail giant also opened a robotics fulfilment centre in Kemps Creek in 2022 and a logistic site in Regents Park which generated more than 3,000 jobs for the area.

This comes amid earlier reports Amazon pulled out of launching a major new stock warehouse on the outskirts of the western Sydney airport, with fears more companies would take their business elsewhere amid the “embarrassing” reams of red tape hobbling construction.

Amazon had been close to signing a tenancy agreement in the Mamre Road precinct for a new fulfilment centre – similar to one launched at Kemps Creek in 2022 – but pulled out, with the company instead focusing on other sites in western Sydney.
