The ageing electricity infrastructure that has stopped Fairfield Hospital from adopting 21st century technologies will be replaced as part of a multimillion-dollar upgrade.

The upgrade — revealed for the first time by the Fairfield Advance — will help the hospital catch up to others by introducing Wi-Fi and digitised patient records.

Perhaps most importantly, it will make it possible to install more medical equipment.

“A $5 million upgrade of the power supply at Fairfield Hospital is underway and work will be completed in a staged approach,” a Fairfield Hospital spokeswoman confirmed.

“There is no compromise to patient care during the upgrade.”

The upgrade comes after candidates competing in the NSW Election campaigned to have the problem treated, including Labor MP for Prospect Hugh McDermott and independent councillor for Fairfield City Dai Le.

Fairfield Hospital’s electrical wiring and supply hasn’t been updated since it was built in 1988. More than 30 years later, it has reached the end of its life cycle and has prevented the hospital from growing with the times.

The upgrade anticipates the hospital’s future needs, the Fairfield Hospital spokeswoman said.

It will include upgrades to the main power supply, as well as new electrical distribution boards and wiring.

Fairfield Hospital falls under NSW Health’s south western Sydney local health district. The district did not respond to questions concerning how long the upgrade would take and whether it would solve the hospital’s other growing pains, such as the patchy smartphone reception and strained airconditioning.
