A man who grew up with a passion for motorbikes is one step closer to achieving his dream by qualifying in the world championships for 2024.

Wellington born Tom Edwards, 22, told The Dubbo News said he started competing at a lower level at world championships from 16, with an opportunity to move into a higher class for this year’s races.

“I’ve been chasing my dream to be a world champion,” Mr Edwards said.

Mr Edwards finished second place after he competed in nine European rounds in the World Super Sport Challenge.

“There are times where you find it hard to believe where you are and what you’re doing but I guess, since I was a kid, it’s been my dream, so I never stopped working for it,” he said.

“I knew I would get to a higher level at some point.”

Mr Edwards is currently in Austria racing for the Yamaha Austria Racing Team before he returns to Australia working as a full-time mechanic for a Newcastle company.

He said this year’s calendar was compiled with nine races in various countries across Europe, including Spain, Netherlands, Italy, England, France, Czech and Portugal.

“Unfortunately, this year I didn’t get the chance to compete in Phillip Island but next year it’s looking like I’ll be doing it, which I think would be my favourite,” Mr Edwards said.

“I really enjoyed the Portugal round because I got my best results which is always fun.

“I think the biggest difference between racing in Australia and racing in the world championships is that it’s such a high level - everyone is very professional.

Mr Edwards said that while racing is a tough sport to get into, his advice for younger competitors is to start with dirt bikes and enjoy the moments.

“Just make sure you have fun whenever you’re doing it, it’s so important,” he said.

He has begun chasing sponsors for next year’s season and is excited for the opportunity.
