Detectives have charged a man with the murder of his partner in far-western NSW, six weeks after the mother-of-two was found dead with “significant injuries” on an outback town road.

Strike Force Akitio detectives visited Andrew Charles Smith, 49, at a Sydney jail on Thursday where he was being held on remand after being charged with wounding Mavis Stanley, 47, with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

They later charged Smith with domestic violence murder, a charge he will face when he reappears in court on January 23.

The upgrading of the charge comes 45 days after police were called to Parkdale Rd in Bourke about 8am on October 29 to find the body of Ms Stanley outside a home.

Detectives will allege she had suffered significant injuries.

Strike Force Akito was established and run by Central North detectives with the assistance of the homicide squad.

Smith was arrested on the day of the alleged murder but not charged with the wounding count until November 6.

Police said in a statement on Friday that detectives visited Smith to charge him with murder following the forensic testing of evidence taken from the crime scene and results from an autopsy.

At his court appearance last month, Smith also faced a stalk and intimidate charge and an apprehended violence order for an unrelated incident.

Court documents stated Smith had allegedly threatened a man with a knife on October 27, two days before Ms Stanley’s death.

Smith was charged with two more stalk and intimidate charges and a destroying property charge.

Police allege Smith also threatened a 16-year-old boy and a 56-year-old man on October 27.

Smith remains in custody on remand.
