The Ice epidemic

A 40-year-old Wellington man has pleaded guilty to supplying ice in the small community while he was on parole after serving time in jail over the death of his former girlfriend.

According to court documents, Scott Allan Thompson came to the attention of police about 4.45pm on June 14, 2020, in Wellington when he was seen walking around the town with a black box.

After officers tried to speak with Thompson, he ran away and after a short chase, police attempted to search him.

He became hostile and officers kneed him as part of efforts to restrain him, according to court documents.

As police tried to get Thompson into the back of a vehicle, their struggle with him continued and an officer suffered a swollen wrist.

Court documents state Thompson sustained a cut to his leg and was taken to hospital to get stitches put in.

When police opened the black box Thompson had been carrying, they found scales, resealable bags and 39.8 grams of methylamphetamine, also known as the drug ice.

Several $50 notes were also found, totalling more than $1700.

Later on the same day, police searched a Simpson St property Thompson was staying in with other people.

Inside a Mazda sedan Thompson had keys to, police discovered another $3750 in cash.

According to a statement of agreed facts tendered in court, Thompson was on parole at the time after he received a conviction for dangerous driving causing death.

In 2017, Thompson received a sentence of four years and nine months, with a non-parole period of three years and seven months for the dangerous driving charge, which was aggravated because he crashed while driving under the influence of ice while disqualified.

The crash claimed the life of 18-year-old Brooke Carroll in July 2015.

After Thompson was charged for the 2020 offending, he pleaded guilty to charges of resisting police, supplying prohibited drug and possessing cash suspected of being proceeds of crime.

He remains remanded in custody and on Thursday he made a brief appearance in the District Court at Dubbo when his case was mentioned.

The court heard Thompson’s case needed to be adjourned because his defence team were awaiting psychological material to clarify a diagnosis of post traumatic stress disorder.

Judge Nanette Williams adjourned the case to January 2022.
