Two bombs previously used for training purposes were discovered by construction workers conducting earthworks at a former RAAF base in Dubbo on Thursday.

An Australian Defence Force spokesperson confirmed police alerted explosives experts to the discovery of “suspected unexplained ordnance” at the site on Cobra Street.

“Joint Explosive Ordnance Support NSW attended and identified the items as two 250lb general purpose bombs,” a Defence spokesperson told The Dubbo News.

“Due to the condition of the bombs, Joint Explosive Ordnance Support NSW was unable to assess whether they were live or inert in situ.”

The bombs were taken to a disused quarry and a demolition charge was used so experts could see what was inside them, the spokesperson said.

“This allowed Joint Explosive Ordnance Support NSW to assess them as inert and the remaining bomb casings were removed for later disposal.

“Inert general purpose bombs are used for training purposes.

“If a member of the public finds a suspicious item, such as unexploded ordnance, or has any already in their possession, they should not touch or disturb it. The local police should be contacted and they will arrange for military experts to attend and dispose of the item as required.”

Andorra Developments owns the former RAAF Base and is currently redeveloping the site which has not been used for more than 15 years.

About 400 homes are expected to be constructed on the site, along with a tourism and industrial precinct which cafes, pubs, accommodation or retail outlets could call home.
