Bourke Police charge four teens who allegedly stole ambulance in outback NSW

A group of teenage boys who allegedly went on a joy ride in a stolen ambulance and drove into a police car have been arrested.

Police have charged four teenage boys over their alleged roles in the theft of an ambulance and break-ins at homes in the NSW north west.

Shortly before 12.30am on October 14, five people armed with knives woke up a 30-year-old man when they broke into his home on Mitchell Street in Bourke.

According to police, the group fled the scene with cash, keys and a Holden Commodore which was found abandoned 98 kilometres away in Brewarrina about 2am.

Police said a second home was broken into about 5.15am at Brewarrina and an ambulance vehicle was stolen after keys were taken from the premises.

Police later spotted the ambulance vehicle on the Kamilaroi Highway, heading towards Bourke.

After failing to stop for police, the vehicle allegedly crossed onto the wrong side of the road and crashed into a police vehicle.

No injuries were reported and the vehicle was later found abandoned at the intersection of Becker and Tudor Streets in Bourke.

A Strike Force was established to investigate the incident and police arrested a 14-year-old boy at a home in Bourke on October 15. He was charged with aggravated break and enter, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, breach of bail and fail to stop during a police pursuit.

A 15-year-old boy was also arrested at another home in Bourke on October 15. He was charged with aggravated break and enter, be carried in conveyance without consent of owner and breach of bail.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested at a home in Brewarrina on October 16 and he was charged with aggravated break and enter, be carried in conveyance without consent of owner and breach of bail.

The trio who were charged on October 15 and 16 were granted bail when they first appeared in a Children’s Court and their cases remain before the courts.

Another 15-year-old boy was arrested at a home in Bourke on October 20 and charged with aggravated break and enter and be carried in conveyance without consent of owner.

He was refused bail when he appeared before a Children’s Court and his case remains before the court.
