Four people have been charged with drink-driving offences after 521 random breath tests and 71 drug tests were conducted during a three-day operation in the state’s west.

Operation Fume ran from Friday to Sunday, targeting drug- and alcohol-related driving offences as well as general road compliance across Orange and surrounding areas.

The operation used mobile and stationary random breath testing, random drug testing and proactive patrols of known “hot spots” within the regions by Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and local officers.

Police said four people had been charged with drink-driving offences.

Seven drivers allegedly returned positive drug tests, with their licences suspended for 24 hours and further action dependent on the outcomes of secondary tests.

“There were a further 27 speeding charges, two unrelated charges, 48 other traffic infringements, and seven defect notices issued,” NSW Police said in a statement.

In one incident of note, Traffic and Highway Patrol officers were conducting speed enforcement on the Mitchell Highway, Larras Lee, around 8.30pm on Saturday, when they checked a white Mazda sedan travelling at 165km/h in a 100km/h zone.

Police stopped the driver — a 34-year-old woman from Dubbo — and gave her an infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h.

In a separate incident, police were conducting stationary random breath testing on the Escort Way, Orange, about 1.40pm on Sunday, when they stopped a white Holden Cruze.

Police conducted a breath test, which allegedly returned a positive result.

The 17-year-old female driver was arrested and taken to Orange Police Station, where she underwent a secondary breath analysis and allegedly returned a positive reading of 0.123.

The girl was charged with drink-driving and was given a future court attendance notice to appear at Orange Local Court on September 5. Her licence was suspended.

Police also charged a man with drink-driving after he allegedly returned a positive reading of 0.111 on a secondary breath analysis.

He was also given a future court attendance notice to appear at Orange Local Court on August 22. His licence was suspended.

Similar operations are expected in the future.
