Australians increasingly ‘checking out’ of two-party voting

With the results out following the local government elections in the state’s central west, these are the fresh and returning faces to Dubbo Regional Council.

Six of the 11 councillors have been re-elected, while the remaining five are starting their first terms.

The new candidates include Labor’s Adam Ryan, Shooters Fishers and Farmers Kate Richardson and Phillip Toynton, Lukas Butler and independent Jen Cowley.

Mr Ryan told this publication it was an “anxious” wait, but he is looking forward to serving the community, particularly the Wellington region.

“We need more consultation with the community,” Mr Ryan said.

“It’s the community who put us in these positions and as a community, they can take us out of these positions. At the end of the day, we work for the ratepayers.

“It’s about listening to what people in the community want, it’s not about getting there and saying, ‘Hey look, I’m a councillor’.”

He added since the augmentation of Wellington and Dubbo, “people need to realise, there’s no us and them – it’s just one now”.

“At the end of the day, we’re a team,” Mr Ryan said.

“I hope everyone who is on [Dubbo Regional Council] is there because they’ve got the same interest, and that’s to make our region better.”

The veterans returning to the hot seat are Mathew Dickerson, Matthew Wright, Shibli Chowdhury, Richard Ivey, Joshua Black and Pam Wells.

There will be a council meeting on Thursday to determine Dubbo Regional Council’s mayor and deputy mayor who will represent the region.

The council represents Dubbo, Geurie, Wellington, along with smaller villages of Brocklehurst, Stuart Town, Ballimore, Toongi, Gollan and several others.
