A Dubbo man accused of breaking and entering a house in Dubbo, has broken into a fit of rage when he learned he would be remanded in custody.

Matthew Peckham, 36, was arrested by Dubbo Police following the incident and police will now allege he stole property to the value of $7000.

Documents tendered to Dubbo Local Court reveal Peckham entered the building between 11:30am and 4:30pm on Sunday, stealing an assortment of “video game consoles, accessories, games and collectables”.

Yesterday, Peckham’s lawyer applied for his bail, highlighting “special vulnerabilities” as a reason for his release back into the community.

The court heard Peckham was offered a job in Orange on Easter Day and he would consider taking up that opportunity as a way of finding work if granted bail.

Peckham’s lawyer said his release would be “ameliorated by strict bail conditions”, including staying at his residence in Dubbo and reporting to Dubbo Police Station every day as well as continuing alcohol and drug counselling.

The police prosecutor opposed the appeal with the court hearing that during police investigations, Peckham’s “fingerprint was identified inside the location” and that they have a strong prosecution case.

He was also said to be on a Community Corrections Order during the time of the alleged offence and the court “would have no confidence (Peckham) would comply with bail conditions”.

In assessing Peckham’s appeal, Magistrate Greg Grogin raised a “long history of non-compliance” with a number of previous matters including “dishonesty and violence”.

Peckham was noticeably irate as he appeared on the audio visual link from the cells of Dubbo Local Court, crying and yelling, prompting Mr Grogin to ask him to “be quiet”.

“People should feel safe to go home,” Mr Grogin told Peckham.

“Due to his history of non-compliance, (the) bail is refused.”

Peckham has pleaded not guilty to the offence and will return to court on June 16.
