Mitchell Callaway, 37, was arrested and charged with the murder over the 2018 death of a nine-month-old baby girl – just one week after police issued a plea for information from the public.
About 10am on July 23, 2018, emergency services were called to a home at Binnaway following reports a baby girl was unresponsive.
The baby was taken to Coonabarabran Hospital by NSW Ambulance, where she died a short time later.
Orana Mid-Western Police District detectives established strike force King to investigate the circumstances surrounding the “suspicious” death after new information was handed over to investigating officers on Wednesday, sparking the execution of a warrant at a home in Binnaway.
Following further inquiries, police arrested Callaway at Bowraville at 9.45am on Thursday morning, with the 37-year-old refused bail to appear at Macksville Local Court.
Callaway told producers in his 2011 audition for The X Factor Australia he almost died after breaking his neck in three places as part of his audition for the hit show.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Gilgandra Police Station on 02 6847 8999.
