A Dubbo business owner’s decision to watch a live stream of his shop’s CCTV paid off when he helped catch three young thieves trying to steal motorbikes.

Youth criminals need more than ‘a nice slap on the wrist’

A Dubbo teenager has been jailed for her role in a late night break in which came to light after a business owner watched it unfold live on his CCTV system.

Kyeka Jane Hill and two men broke into Grandeys Bike Bitz on Victoria Street in Dubbo shortly before 11.30pm on November 22 last year.

In court documents police said the 19-year-old and her accomplices were caught out by the owner of the business who witnessed their crimes while watching a live stream of CCTV.

One of the men who was with Hill was seen using a grinder to cut through a lock to gain entry to a shed at the business and another man was spotted pushing a quad bike outside a sliding door.

Police said Hill stopped the bike in a driveway while the two men took another motorbike from the business.

After an alarm went off the trio panicked and fled.

One of the men got away with a motorbike which was later found nearby on Alam Street.

Police said DNA evidence obtained from handlebars and the CCTV footage helped nab the trio.

On December 19 when police tried to arrest Hill at a home on Myall Street she ran into a bedroom and two officers had to restrain her by grabbing hold of her right arm.

According to police Hill twisted and turned her body, threw her arms around and fell onto a bed during the dramatic arrest.

During the struggle one of the officers sustained minor injuries after stumbling into a doorway where there was exposed electrical wiring protruding from a light switch socket.

In Dubbo Local Court Hill pleaded guilty to resist police and break, enter and steal in company charges.

Magistrate Theresa Hamilton said Hill had been in custody since her arrest and while bikes had been recovered, their value was high.

“She has had a number of prior convictions … at the time of the offending she was on parole,” magistrate Hamilton said.

Hill was convicted and sentenced to 14 months in jail.

With time already served taken into account she will be eligible for parole in September.
