A heavily boozed-up man who admitted to stabbing his partner to death in Bourke will be sentenced next year.

Kenneth James Knight, 52, appeared in the NSW Supreme Court on Friday, maintaining his guilty plea for murder.

According to a statement of agreed facts, Knight was subjected to an apprehended domestic violence order when he stabbed his partner of about 30 years in the early hours of March 13.

After finishing up at work the night before, the victim – Cassandra Brown – went to Bourke Bowling Club, where Knight “drank a substantial amount of alcohol”.

“A review of CCTV footage … shows the offender consumed 11 schooners of beer,” agreed facts stated.

“Footage also shows that the offender and victim did not drink and socialise together for all of the time they were at the club that night.”

After leaving the club, the pair were both dropped off by a courtesy bus on Wortumurtie Street with Brown later telling her daughter “your father’s out there, getting off the bus”.

Agreed facts reveal Brown did not want Knight to sleep with her and said “don’t talk to me like that, you can go along”.

Brown told Knight she would call the police if he did not leave.

This prompted Knight to walk to the kitchen where he grabbed a black-handled knife, holding it behind his back and approaching Brown.

“[Knight] grabbed [Brown] by the shoulder, pulled her backwards and stabbed her once in the back with the knife in his right hand,” agreed facts state.

Brown was seen leaning against a fridge where she said to her daughter, “Kenneth stabbed me”.

Knight threw the knife into the laundry before leaving.

With blood coming from the wound in her back, Brown fell to the ground with the witness using a towel to apply pressure before calling the police just after midnight.

Knight was found by another witness sitting on the road at the end of the driveway.

He was asked, “what the f**k did you do that for?” to which he replied, ”because she doesn‘t love me anymore”.

Police quickly arrived at the scene, seeing an intoxicated Knight lying in the middle of the road.

Knight then “staggered” towards the officers, asking them to ”take me away”.

Police entered the home, offering assistance to Brown as they waited for paramedics to arrive, but she was “unresponsive” and died at the scene.

Knight was placed under arrest with officers locating a 15cm knife on the floor of the laundry with “blood visible on the blade”.

While with police, Knight said, “I love my woman, bud” and then saying “yeah, well I don’t it”.

He was transferred to Bourke Hospital “due to his state of intoxication” where he was given time to recover before being conveyed to Bourke Police Station.

Knight recounted his night at the Bowling Club, saying he drank between 10 and 20 schooners of Tooheys Extra Dry and despite not wanting to talk about the attack, he said “I wish I hadn’t, but I did”.

When questioned about his intentions with the knife, Knight said, “I don’t know, I didn’t mean to harm anyone, like I’ve been with this woman for f**ken that long.

“I love her man … and I smack her over the years but, you know … not that … bad … it’s only a push or a smack or something like that. I don’t know how this happened,” Knight continued.

On Friday in the NSW Supreme Court, Knight was formally committed for sentence.

It was agreed by the Crown and Knight‘s legal team that the matter should be heard at Bourke.

Knight will be sentenced on March 30, and it is expected proceedings will take about a day to finalise.
