A Dubbo man accused of assaulting a police sergeant who had arrested him for alleged drug possession, has flown into a wild rage when he learned he would be heading back into custody.

James Adams, 23, was arrested after an encounter with Dubbo Police on Monday in which police will now allege he was carrying 10 grams of cannabis.

Documents tendered to Dubbo Local Court reveal Adams was charged with drug possession and assaulting a sergeant from Dubbo Police and causing actual bodily harm.

Today, Adams’ lawyer applied for his bail, stating the alleged offence was not of the most serious nature.

The court heard Adams could live with his pregnant girlfriend and her younger child in Riverstone, in Sydney’s West.

Magistrate Theresa Hamilton noted Adams had previously served sentences for “similar” offending.

“He’s on a community corrections order for a similar type of offending,” Ms Hamilton said.

“Taking into account his lengthy criminal history and the community corrections order that was in place I do not think the risk of him offending can be mitigated and bail is therefore refused.”

Adams appeared on the audio visual link from the cells of Dubbo Local Court where he made a furious outburst as he learned he would be remanded in custody.

He began to lash out, standing on furniture and banging on perspex screens in the cells, which could be seen and heard by the local court even after the link was terminated.

Adams has pleaded not guilty to both offences and will return to court in June.
