A Wellington man who was allegedly found in possession of firearms, a gel blaster, detonation cord, fuses and a prohibited electrical control device has been released on bail.

Guy Thomas Bailey, 34, entered no pleas when he appeared in Dubbo Local Court, charged with nine offences which included possessing an unauthorised firearm and explosive, and manufacturing a prohibited weapon.

When police searched a property in Wellington, Mr Bailey was allegedly found in the possession of a homemade 12-gauge firearm, two coils of detonator cord, four fuses, a gel blaster, ammunition and 34.9 grams of cannabis.

Mr Bailey is alleged to have manufactured a prohibited electrical control device and the 12 gauge firearm.

During a bail hearing police prosecutor Adam Checkley told the court Mr Bailey had a drug addiction and the case against him was “overwhelming”.

“The accused makes admissions to the majority of all offences,” Mr Checkley said.

Mr Bailey’s lawyer Jacky Dougan-Jones told the court her client had no history of committing offences like those he had most recently been accused of.

“He’s never been in custody before, he has an extremely limited record which largely relates to driving offences,” she said.

Ms Dougan-Jones said Mr Bailey needed to be with his family and was currently receiving the single parenting payment from Centrelink.

Citing Mr Bailey’s limited criminal record, Magistrate Theresa Hamilton granted Mr Bailey bail.

“I think he should be given the benefit of the doubt,” Magistrate Hamilton said.

The case returns to court on October 21.
