Abandoned pets and stray animals could be soon welcomed into a new $5.5 million home – if a council in the state’s west approves the multimillion-dollar development application.
Dubbo Regional Council’s new Dubbo City Animal Shelter will provide an “upgraded and improved” shelter.
The new site is planned to replace the existing shelter at the intersection of Boothenba and Yarrandale roads.
“The existing facilities are ageing and struggling to meet community demands due to population growth in the region,” the developer said.
The new site is proposed to feature a large warehouse or barn styled building, a smaller building for administrative purposes, animal support areas and large external areas designed for exercise and running activities.
Dog facilities will include an area with pens designed for 65 “healthy” dogs, an area for eight “dangerous” dogs and an isolation area for 16 “sick or diseased” dogs.
There will also be an area for puppies and adoption dogs.
A separate area for cats will include pens for 22 “healthy" cats, 12 isolated cats and an adoption room.
Operational hours are from 12pm to 4pm from Monday to Friday and 11am to 1pm on Saturdays.
There will be four parking spaces for the public, including two disabled parking areas and five for staff.
According to the developer, the site will be located east of the existing buildings to “keep up with changing and future demands”.
“The design addresses the functional use of a contemporary animal shelter and its operation and animal housing, integrated with ecologically sensitive design measures to provide a responsible and contributory development.”
The shelter plans are on exhibition until July 18.
