The women, aged 53 and 55, were sitting in a Mercedes Coupe on Darling Street when Grimes and the other men allegedly threatened the pair with a knife and entered the vehicle.

Police said the women fled and the men were seen leaving the area in the vehicle, which contained the women’s belongings.

Grimes was arrested by police at the Orana Mall shopping centre in Dubbo on Tuesday afternoon.

He was charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated taking of motor vehicle with person in it and driving while unlicensed.

Mr Grimes appeared in Dubbo Local Court on Wednesday and did not enter pleas.

During a bail hearing, Grimes’s lawyer Jacky Dougan-Jones said her client should be granted bail because he would face a lengthy period remanded in custody and be unlikely to stand trial in the District Court until July, 2021.

Ms Dougan-Jones said Grimes needed to be in Dubbo because his brother had two weeks to live.

“He also tells me that his mother has an operation in a week and is sick as well,” she said.

Police opposed Grimes’s application for bail and Sergeant Rob Wilkin told the court the accused was “an extreme risk to the community”.

“He held a knife to the victim’s neck and told them ‘get out of the vehicle or I’ll kill you’,” Sergeant Wilkin said.

“He has a lengthy history of violence. He’s also got previous warrants and terms of imprisonment for similar offences.”

Magistrate Theresa Hamilton said Grimes was on bail and parole when he committed the alleged offences.

She refused the application for bail and adjourned Grimes’s case to December 10.
