A critical incident investigation has been launched after a man in police custody was hospitalised after he was seen attempting injure himself in a police cell.
The 43-year-old man was arrested at a home in Cowra around 10.40pm on Thursday for domestic violence-related offences and taken to Cowra Police Station.
While in custody at the station, officers attempted to intervene when the man was seen attempting to injure himself in the police cell.
The man’s health had deteriorated in a caged police vehicle while being transported from Cowra to Bathurst, so officers took him to Bathurst Hospital around 1.40am on Friday where he is in a serious but stable condition.
A Central West Police District critical investigation team will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation will be subject to an independent review.
The Professional Standard Command will be overseeing the investigation.
