A trial date has been set for a man who allegedly killed a beloved farmer in the state’s west more than two years after his death. Here’s the latest.

Man charged after breakthrough in Nyngan murder case

A trial for an alleged murderer, who has been charged with the death of a farmer in the state’s west in 2023, has been set for March next year.

Emergency services found Joel Carter’s body at his Gilgai Rd property in Miandetta, 26km west of Nyngan, around 7.45am on January 25, 2023, after concerns were raised about his welfare.

Police allege the 59-year-old farmer was killed on January 23, 2023, from significant head trauma.

Strike Force Namadgi was established to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr Carter’s death.

Clinton Beau Wrigley, from Warren, was arrested and charged in March last year following extensive inquiries before a vehicle stop in Ravenswood.

Wrigley appeared before a Supreme Court in Sydney on Friday via an audiovisual link where he formally pleaded not guilty to murder.

Justice Helen Wilson set the trial to start on March 31, 2025, at Dubbo Supreme Court, more than two years after the alleged murder.

Wrigley is also charged with stealing Mr Carter’s Toyota HiLux, destroying the vehicle with a fire and stealing various of his tools.

Defence solicitor Nicholas Broadbent will be defending Wrigley in the six week trial which he will attend in person.

Police allege Wrigley – who was known to Mr Carter – assaulted him at the property before stealing his car and driving away.
