Father Chris Riley wasn’t surprised when he saw the overflowing box of sports gear at Wenty Leagues.
The founder of charity Youth Off The Streets said the people of Wentworthville always deliver.
“Wenty has always been good to us,” Fr Riley said.
“The donated $50,000 to run our Wenty home and now they’ve given us this sports items that are going to go far.”
The motto of the group according to Fr Riley is “run them and feed them”, which the donation as part of #DoSomething Day will add to.
“With the boys sports is great, if we can get them out in a field and with a few balls to kick around it’s very good for them,” he said.
Wenty Leagues chief executive Glenn Kovacs hoped the day would inspire other do-gooders.
“Whether it be a ball or pair of footy boots, I encourage everyone to go above and beyond during DoSomething Day and give their best through acts of kindness. A little bit can go a long way.”
Eels legend Nathan Hindmarsh was on hand to spread the joy for the day, signing autographs and posing for photos.
Monica Smith drove in from Penrith to see the former rugby league captain and snap a pic with him.
“I love him, my whole family does,” Mrs Smith said.
“I have to face the traffic back out to Penrith but it was worth it for the photo.”
An initiative of the DoSomething Foundation, NewsLocal and Your Local Club, DoSomething Day seeks to celebrate our volunteers and highlight those who are giving back by spreading kindness in their community.
