MEALS on Wheels is at the heart of many communities as it gives a helping hand through its 35,000 volunteers around NSW.

“It is all about people in the community joining forces to help others,” a Meals on Wheels spokeswoman said.”

While age and disability may reduce some people’s capacity to get out and about, Meals on Wheels help make it possible for them to stay in their homes, where most are happiest and maintain their independence.

“Delivery of nutritious meals, social interaction and a friendly check of a client’s wellbeing by Meals on Wheels volunteers can help people live the lives they choose.”

From its inception about 60 years ago, Meals on Wheels has grown to become a driving force of care in the community. In the course of a year, more than 4.5 million meals are delivered by NSW volunteers.

Meals on Wheels has urged others to use DoSomething Day on Wednesday, July 25 to consider volunteering and do a good turn for the community.

An initiative of the DoSomething Foundation, NewsLocal and Your Local Club, it celebrates the volunteers in our community and those spreading kindness.

Meals on Wheels says volunteers are crucial to its operations.

“They drive the cars and deliver the meals and other food services to clients, as well as help run the service by serving on the management committee,” the charity’s spokeswoman said.

“Depending which service they work with, volunteers can also assist transporting clients to a community centre to enjoy a meal along with other social activities.

“Others may be able to provide office skills helping set up databases, writing newsletters or preparing promotional flyers for events.”

Meals on Wheels Day will be held on August 29, when its Cuppa for a Cause event will also take place.

“By donating in exchange for a cup of tea, Meals on Wheels NSW can ensure thousands of Australians are never without their favourite brew,” the charity’s spokeswoman said.

“Support the strength of a good cuppa and spread the warmth by hosting your own Cuppa for a Cause.”
