SOMETIMES when the world gets too much, there’s nothing more blokes need than a little time tinkering and bantering with some mates in a shed.
It’s the guiding ethos behind the Men’s Shed program and it’s why Corowa RSL is hosting an open day to promote the work being doing in their area.
Corowa Men’s Shed is a place where males of all ages get together to work on meaningful projects in a welcoming environment in order to open a dialogue on men’s mental health.
According to the shed’s founder, Graham Withers, the men work on projects that allow them to give back to the community.
“People will come to us with a broken leg off a dining chair so we will fix that up for them and things like that,” he said.
“We also make toys for kids, do projects for the dementia patients in the local hospital and have made outdoor equipment at St Marys Primary School.”
The shed community meet every Tuesday and Friday at the between 8.30am and 12.30pm to work collaboratively on various projects, while sitting down a sharing a cuppa and a biscuit to chat about whatever is on their minds.
“It’s a really great group of guys who get along really well,” he said.
“We have a bit of banter and a laugh, but a few of the blokes have issues and that sort of thing so when that comes up we have a chat about that too.”
At the moment, the group of 32 members is mainly made up of retirees with a few younger gentlemen in the mix.
The open day will be held on July 24 as part of Do Something Day and will aim to invite more men into the shed to expand their community.
“Everyone is welcome, and most of our members have joined by just showing up and having a chat with us,” he said.
“It’s great to see a group of men come together as a collective for a great cause.”
Corowa RSL is also supporting Men’s Sheds at Wahgunyah, Rutherglen and Oaklands and is planning to help expand the Corowa operation.
Do Something Day will take place on July 25. The day inspires people to give back to charities and causes that could do with a helping hand.
