DoSomething Day 2018

Toukley RSL has kicked off its DoSomething Day campaign this year with a delicious thank you to local fire fighters, police, ambos and paramedics.

For the second year running the club provided free pizza lunch or dinner last week to those who keep the community safe.

Club marketing manager Debbie Dickson said the club was only too happy to do a small something for first responders.

“Those services really do keep our community safe — they put their lives on the line for us and are not always recognised,” Ms Dickson said.

“Every time they walk out the door to work they put themselves at risk and that’s not what most people face,” she said.

“The least we could do is provide them with some free pizza to say thank you.”

Ms Dickson said the club was a firm supporter of the “give something back” ethos of DoSomething Day.

“We first got involved three years go when we invited the local SES volunteers in for something similar,” she said.

“We’d just had some big storms and they had been working so hard — we asked them in for morning tea.

“That just flowed on to us asking the first responders to come along for pizza.”

The club will also hand over a cheque to the Northern Women’s health Centre as part of its lead up to DoSomething Day.

“We are aligned with the anti domestic violence campaign White Ribbon and very strong supporters of that,” she said.

“We have a fundraising initiative through our membership — members can pay an extra dollar when renewing their membership of joining and those funds are donated to the Northern Womens Health Centre who help women with counselling, legal advice, grief services, self esteem groups and that sort of thing.

“They can’t currently meet the demands of the clients that are coming through the door — the majority of whom are domestic violence victims.

“We’ll take our first cheque for $1500 up there this week and take some morning tea up for the mums and kiddies at playgroup.”
