DoSomething Day 2018: Central Coast gave its best

There are few better feelings than doing a nice thing for someone else - and so it was for DoSomething Day today when Coasties gave their best in so many different ways.

The spirit of giving was alive and well on the Central Coast for DoSomething Day today when small acts of kindness were the order of the day.

The crew of radio station SeaFm Central Coast started the ball rolling early providing hot cuppas down at Coast Shelter which is the region’s leading organisations helping the homeless.

Helping kids

The Kids Club in Umina were buzzing with excitement on Wednesday morning too as the residents of the Peninsula Village made their monthly visit to volunteer.

The elderly residents took part in the morning classes, helping the kids as they work to engage, learn and play - a learning model that encourages the young ones to play as part of their education.

Some residents tried their hand at music as the children played their favourite instruments, while others took a quiter approach and read stories to the curious minds.

It was the perfect DoSomething Day activity, but not the first by the residnets.

“This is fantastic, we have never been delivered food before. We really appreciate it,” she said.

“We are the biggest ward and have 36 beds. We have 62 staff on this ward, a majority are part time. We are well staffed here. It’s a great ward.”

Sweet things

Cakes by Kyla’s Kyla Daniels and Doug Allan made up 10 boxes of cupcakes for Do Something Day.

“This is the second year we have done Do Something Day. Last year we paid a visit to a nursing home and this year we decided to take it to the next level,” she said.

Instead of choosing one location for the delicious delivery, Mrs Daniels and Mr Allan decided to hit the road and see where they end up.

“We are going to choose as we go. We will probably end up at Coast Shelter, the hospital and a nursing home,” Mrs Daniels said.

“The aim is to try and make people’s day a bit happier.”

Mr Allan said there was an “insane amount of flavours” throughout the boxes including lemon meringue, blueberry, iced vovo, rocky road, golden gay time and one known as “fluffy white cloud”.

About a dozen members of the group enjoyed scones with jam and cream after thier meeting.

“Its been fantastic for us to touch so many local organisations through DoSomething Day activities,” said club marketing manager Debbie Dickson.

The club has been an active supporter of DoSomething Day for three years, including providing free pizza lunch or dinner for emergency service workers and volunteers earlier this year.
