The mother of cliff-fall victim Blake Hayes revealed he had woken from his coma and spoken a few words to his relieved family.

Prue Bowman spent an agonising four-day wait while Blake, 17, had extensive surgery for injuries including a broken back, severe internal injuries and multiple fractures including both his wrists.

But Mrs Bowman told the Manly Daily last night his team at Royal North Shore Hospital were able to let him wake from an induced coma for the first time yesterday morning.

“He is talking to us — it’s amazing,” Mrs Bowman said.

“Obviously he has got a long way to go but he has no head injuries, no brain injuries and no paralysis. He’s so lucky.”

She said: “We can’t thank everyone enough. It was a terrible situation made a little bit better.

“There were so many people who helped him on the day and he’s got an amazing team at Royal North Shore.”

Blake’s stepfather Jason Bowman said the teen managed a smile as he woke from sedation.

“He has movement in his arms and legs,’’ Mr Bowman said. “He gave us a smile and knows we’re there and we feel blessed.”
