A VOLUNTEER oil painting teacher, an Aboriginal artist and a neighbourhood volunteer group that helps disadvantaged people were some of Randwick Council's Australia Day Community Service Award recipients.
The awards were presented by Randwick Mayor Scott Nash at a ceremony at the Prince Henry Centre, Little Bay, on Sunday.
The recipients of the awards included Margaret Vasey (volunteer oil painting teacher), Jim Dubos (rugby union coach), Uncle Keith Stewart (Aboriginal artist), The Seekers Coordinators (self-help group for women over 40), as well as the Veged Out Team (a neighbourhood volunteer group).
The Veged Out Team helps disadvantaged people in the south ward, including Housing NSW tenants.
The volunteer group provides low-cost fruit and vegetable bags to more than 65 families in the local area.
The two Young Citizen of the Year awards were presented to Will Frazer, 9, and Coogee Surf Life Saving Club's Julien Vincent.
Will was recognised for helping a man caught in a rip at Maroubra beach, while Julien was recognised for his service to lifesaving patrols and surf rescues.
The Mayor's Award was awarded to Uncle Les Davison for "protecting our country, culture and spirit".
