CONSTRUCTION has started on the 88-unit development in North Eveleigh which will provide people on low to moderate incomes access to affordable housing.
The $28 million dollar development near the Carriageworks galleries will have one, two and three-bedroom apartments along with a rooftop garden and basement parking for 39 cars.
Not-for-profit organisation City West Housing, which assists people find affordable housing in the inner-city areas, is managing the project.
CEO of City West Housing Janelle Goulding said the new development would provide people the opportunity to work and live in the Redfern area, which might not have been available to them due to high costs of rents.
She added that the project was a significant redevelopment for the Carriageworks area and also for City West Housing which won the tender for its design and development from the Urban Growth Development Corporation in December 2012.
It also applied for and received 88 National Rental Affordable Scheme incentives for the project.
City West Housing currently manages and operates 547 affordable apartments in Pyrmont, Ultimo and Greensquare and has assisted nearly 1000 people to find accommodation in the inner city.
In addition to North Eveleigh, the organisation also has plans for similar developments for affordable housing in Zetland and Glebe.
“We’ve got over 600 people on our waiting list and we can’t build them fast enough,” Mr Goulding said. “It’s such a great system that councils need to look at expanding.
“You’ve got employment in those areas but you don’t necessarily have the infrastructure so you’ve got to try and keep people living and working locally and that’s why the system works so well. It saves the government spending a lot of money on infrastructure.
Locals wanting to secure a place in the North Eveleigh development can register their interest by contacting City West Housing. Applicants will be evaluated on needs for accommodation in the area.
The North Eveleigh project is due to be completed in December.
