Police say a person captured on CCTV footage running from the scene of a suspicious fire at a beloved Sydney cafe may be able to help with inquiries into how the blaze started.
Emergency services rushed to Badde Manors on Glebe Point Rd just after 12.30am on September 29 after multiple reports the iconic inner-west institution was alight.
Fire crews extinguished the blaze and the cafe, which had been undergoing repairs, sustained minor damage with images showing a front window completely damaged.
Residential units above the cafe were evacuated but no injuries were reported.
Leichhardt police officers are investigating the fire and have released fresh CCTV footage in an appeal for information.
The footage shows a person on Glebe Point Rd around the time of the fire who police believe can assist with inquiries.
The person is described as being medium build with dark coloured hair in a low bun, wearing a black baseball cap and light blue face mask, hooded jumper with broad horizontal light grey stripes and dark grey pants, pulling a two-wheel shopping trolley and black bag.
Badde Manors took to Facebook following the crash, saying the fire caused “a great deal of damage”.
“As a family business, we are all so shocked and devastated by this but also grateful the police were able to contain it before anything sinister happened,” the cafe wrote.
“It's hard to find the right words to say, but we appreciate your support and do look forward to seeing all your faces again – hopefully soon.”
Glebe locals expressed their shock over the fire, with some saying the cafe was “a bedrock of the community”.
“I'm shocked that anyone would want to damage your place,” one Facebook user wrote.
“Your cafe has been a bedrock of the Glebe community for decades and has been a fave of mine for years. I love your vegetarian food.”
Another woman said Badde Manors was part of the suburb’s “heart and soul”.
“Glebe isn‘t Glebe without Badde Manors,” one woman commented.
