An officer at Clarence Correctional Centre has allegedly been brutally assaulted in a repeated attack by an inmate inside an officers post.
Corrective Services NSW sources said the inmate entered a staff office at the Grafton-based centre before allegedly assaulting the officer.
Sources at the prison alleged the inmate repeatedly struck the officer to the head, as other inmates “cheered him on”.
Clarence Correctional Centre is privately run by Serco Group.
NSW Police orginally said the local area command were unaware of any incident at the centre, before a spokeswoman said police were told of an incident where “an inmate allegedly assaulted a community corrections officer at a correctional facility near Grafton”.
“The officer was taken to hospital for treatment to facial injuries,” the spokeswoman said. “Officers were notified and have commenced an investigation.”
Serco was contacted for comment.
