Scandinavian Film Festival sheds light on universal truths for all
THE second annual Scandinavian Film Festival showcases Nordic talent on the big screen and proves language is no barrier for truth.

Don't miss out on the headlines from City East. Followed categories will be added to My News.
THE ability to speak, to show, to see and to be seen is a powerful thing — in any language.
This is seen nowhere more powerfully than in the story of Inghilda Tapio — poet, performer and one of the last generation of Saami reindeer herders born to nomadic parents in Saapmi, Sweden’s Arctic Circle.
Tapio and her family are the subjects of Reindeer in my Saami Heart, a documentary by Sydney-based director Janet Merewether, screening as part of the Scandinavian Film Festival this month.
Tapio is a member of Sweden’s ‘stolen generation’, forced by the Swedish government to attend residential boarding schools in the 1950s — removed from her teepee home,
reindeer herds and parents for months at a time, confused by the Swedish language, intimidated by foreign customs and the unfamiliar school environment.
The parallels to Australia’s own history is obvious, Merewether said.
“I would really like the film to start a conversation here. I think there’s already a healthy conversation happening about language loss and the importance of preserving languages,” she said.
Now an accomplished poet and activist for the Saami people, Tapio has been instrumental in ensuring her native language doesn’t die out.
“Writing and poetry is a really good expression for people who are the victims of government policies especially in relation to families being separated,” Merewether said.
While Tapio is clear that her experience does not speak for all Saami people, the power of words — English and Saami is used to “give a sense of the beauty of language”, Merewether said.
The director, who was shocked when the Swedish media weren’t interested in a story about the Saami, said she was prompted to bring the film to Australia for it’s premiere and hoped it would resonate here.
“I think in some way, even though they’re situated over in Sweden, I hope that we might also and for myself, personally acknowledge the impact these policies have on people’s lives and actually learn more here about peoples experiences,” Merewether said.
Reindeer in my Saami Heart screens as part of the Scandinavian Film Festival, which features 22 films from the Nordic tradition.
Writer/director Martin Zandvliet’s multi award-winning Land of Mine and 2016 Golden Globe Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, The Fencer — a fictionalised biopic of the life of legendary fencer Endel Nelis who hid from Stalin’s secret police in a remote Estonian village as the local school’s sports instructor.
Along with opening night film Gold Coast, Norway delivers The Wave, an action-packed Norwegian box office hit about a geologist who foresees a tsunami in the scenic tourist hot spot of Geiranger fjord.
2014 festival guest Laura Birn stars in Absolution — a tense domestic drama from Finnish writer-director Petri Kotwica which details the nightmarish spiral of guilt and revenge triggered by a hit-and-run accident.
