Yasir Musa, Saia Fangu Fangu and Beshoi Butros double stabbing ‘inexplicable’

Two housemates were repeatedly stabbed as they lay in bed in a break-in more akin to a horror movie.

A disturbing double stabbing and home invasion in an inner suburb of Sydney has been labelled “completely inexplicable and out of the blue” after two international students were stabbed about 30 times, a court has heard.

One victim pleaded with his attackers “take whatever you want, just don’t kill me, I do not want to die” during the horrific ordeal on July 6 last year at Chippendale.

However, his pleas were ignored and the attack continued as he lay helpless in bed.

Three offenders Yasir Musa, 22, Saia Fangu Fangu, 19, and Beshoi Butros, 22, have pleaded guilty to the attack and home invasion which took place inside a Shepherd St share house about 8.30am that morning.

The three young men appeared in NSW District Court last week for a sentence hearing.

Judge Jane Culver listened to submissions and will hand down her judgment in March 2021.

“This offence is completely inexplicable and out of the blue,” Musa’s lawyer told the court.

He claimed his client was suffering from untreated PTSD at the time of the offence, resulting from a difficult upbringing, which went someway in explaining his behaviour.

“It is consistent with how someone might act out especially a young man.”

He also said his client was drug and alcohol affected that morning. Musa’s lawyer conceded his client had committed the worst offending of the three.

The agreed facts stated four international students were sleeping inside the Shepherd St share house when three offenders, not known to them, broke in through an unlocked screen door.

Musa, 22, armed himself with two knives from the kitchen and entered one of the bedrooms.

House mate Huifu “Kevin” Yu woke to find Musa inside his room wearing a mask.

The agreed facts stated Musa stabbed Yu about 15 times as he lay helpless in bed and continually demanded money from the victim.

The victim said “take whatever you want, just don’t kill me, I do not want to die”. However, Musa continued to slash him.

Fangu Fangu and Musa then entered a bedroom upstairs and stabbed house mate Junhui “Harry” Fan about 13 times, including in the face, while demanding money and access to his bank account.

At one stage Fangu Fangu used the victim’s forehead to write down a bank code on a piece of paper.

The agreed facts stated the attack only stopped when Fan played dead and pretended to stop breathing.

The three offenders fled with thousands of dollars worth of goods including bank cards, electronics, and cash.

Butros did not enter either bedroom during the home invasion but took some of the stolen property.

A seriously injured Yu stumbled out of the house and managed to get help. He and house mate Fan were rushed to hospital and required multiple operations to treat their injuries.

Yu suffered stab wounds all over his body as well as fractures to his nose, cheek and eye. Many of the stab wounds were to his head and one stab wound caused a laceration to his bowel.

He was released from a rehab hospital a month and a half later and had limited movement in his left eye.

Meanwhile, Fan suffered multiple stab wounds to his head including three deep cuts to the left side of his face, one being 10cm long.

“As a consequence of the stab wounds to his face he suffered traumatic left facial palsy,” the agreed facts stated.

He also suffered deep cuts to his left arm and his right index finger was almost completely chopped off.

All three co-offenders were arrested following a police investigation including Musa in Brisbane two weeks later. The trio have remained in custody since.

The three young offenders were supported by a large group of family members in court last Thursday who spread out across the public gallery and jury box to maintain social distancing.

Musa and Fangu Fangu have pleaded guilty to two counts of specially aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence. Butros has pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence.
