A North Shore soccer coach struck a man in the head with a phone until he bled after a hostile encounter at ritzy inner city bar The Caterpillar Club, a court has heard.

Marc Anthony Kefford faced Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm.

Magistrate Theo Tsavdaridis convicted and sentenced the Waverton man to an 18-month community correction order with a $1500 fine.

Court documents state Kefford, 47, had a run-in with the victim’s female colleague while the pair were having a work party at The Caterpillar Club on Pitt St on February 5.

The victim believed his female colleague did not want to talk to Kefford, so he told Kefford to “go away”.

The father-of-two left and spotted the male victim outside while he was waiting for his McDonald’s order near Wynyard station.

The soccer coach shoved the man in the chest, causing him to stumble backwards and retreat.

Kefford used the hand he was holding his phone in to hit the victim on the head, cutting the man’s forehead and causing him to start bleeding.

The victim walked away, with Kefford following and scolding him until they reached George St.

The victim dialled triple-0 while an unknown man stopped the offender from getting close to the injured man.

Kefford left and the assault was captured on Sydney Trains CCTV footage.

Court documents state a manager at The Caterpillar Club identified Kefford because he was a “high paying and frequent customer”.

Kefford was called into Day Street Police Station and was compliant with police but refused to explain his behaviour.

At court, Kefford’s lawyer Mr Davis claimed the victim had called his client a “pedo” leading up to the assault, and Kefford regretted his actions.

“He accepts what he did was unacceptable and inappropriate and criminal conduct,” he said.

He is a civil engineer and contributes to the community by coaching soccer games, the court heard.

Mr Tsavdaridis said for someone who is normally of a good nature, Kefford let himself and the community down on this occasion.
