The team behind world-renowned Bondi Icebergs would run a new CBD rooftop restaurant and bar if $9.4 million plans are approved.

Brookfield Properties has submitted the development application for the venue above Wynyard Station.

Shell House Restaurant and Bar would sit partially on the ground floor, as well as levels nine and 10 of ‘Shell House’ – the site of the old Menzies Hotel and corporate headquarters of the Shell Company until the 1970s – at 2 Carrington St.

Shell House Restaurant and Bar, operated by The Icebergs Group, would include a large open plan combined bar and seating areas with a capacity of 275 persons on the ground floor, planning documents reveal.

There would then be a large open plan combined bar area and seating area with a capacity for 315 on level nine and 295 on level 10 of the building.

The three levels would accommodate 140, 226 and 158 seated diners respectively.

A lift lobby area would provide access from the ground floor to levels nine and 10.

Built in the 1930s, Shell House is the only major interwar Palazzo-style building in Sydney with a rare terracotta tile facade.

The current plans form part of a previously approved $2 billion Brookfield Properties’ project for the development of Wynyard Place, and included the demolition of The Menzies Hotel, the construction of a 27-storey office tower, and the partial demolition and refurbishment of Shell House and 285 George St for commercial and retail uses.

The Wynyard Place project is currently under construction and targeted for completion in 2021.

The National Australia Bank’s Sydney headquarters will be relocated to 10 Carrington St and Shell House.

The restaurant plans are on public exhibition at City of Sydney Council until November 17.
